Digestive Integrity

The combined structural and functional health of the gastrointestinal tract — including the gut lining, digestive enzyme systems, microbiome balance, and intestinal barrier — that together enable proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and protection against systemic inflammation. Often referred to in patient conversation as ‘gut healing.’

Food Sensitivities

Non-allergic, non-IgE-mediated adverse reactions to specific foods that produce delayed and varied symptoms — including bloating, fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, skin issues, and headaches — driven by immune, enzymatic, or gut microbiome mechanisms.

GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus)

A comprehensive stool DNA analysis test that quantifies gut bacteria, identifies pathogens and parasites, measures markers of intestinal inflammation and immune function, and assesses intestinal permeability. Used by SPOKEmed as a primary gut health diagnostic tool.

Gut Microbiome

The vast and complex community of trillions of microorganisms — including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea — residing primarily in the large intestine. The gut microbiome plays foundational roles in metabolism, immunity, hormone regulation, mental health, and inflammation.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

A functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurring abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits — including diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both — in the absence of identifiable structural disease.

Leaky Gut (Intestinal Permeability)

A condition in which the tight junctions of the intestinal lining become compromised, allowing incompletely digested food particles, bacterial components, and toxins to pass into the bloodstream — triggering immune activation, inflammation, and systemic health consequences.

Microbiome Dysbiosis

An imbalance in the gut microbiome — characterized by reduced diversity, overgrowth of harmful or opportunistic organisms, and depletion of beneficial bacteria — that disrupts normal gut function and contributes to systemic health problems.

Nutrient Absorption

The process by which the digestive system breaks down food and absorbs vitamins, minerals, macronutrients, and other compounds through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. Impaired absorption leads to nutrient deficiencies even with adequate dietary intake.

Prebiotics

Non-digestible dietary compounds — primarily specific fibers and resistant starches — that selectively feed and stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome.

Probiotics

Live microorganisms — primarily bacteria and yeasts — that, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host by supporting and restoring gut microbiome balance.

Reflux (GERD — Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)

A condition in which stomach contents — including acid — flow back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, chronic cough, and throat irritation. Often driven by impaired lower esophageal sphincter function and in some cases by low stomach acid.

Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)

Metabolites produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber — particularly butyrate, propionate, and acetate — that serve as the primary energy source for intestinal cells, reduce gut inflammation, strengthen the gut lining, improve insulin sensitivity, and regulate appetite.

Systemic Inflammation

A state of chronic, low-grade immune activation throughout the body — distinct from acute inflammation in response to injury or infection — that silently promotes metabolic disease, hormonal dysfunction, cardiovascular risk, autoimmune conditions, and accelerated aging.
