The GI-MAP, developed by Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory, uses quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology to detect and quantify specific DNA targets in stool samples. This allows precise identification and measurement — not just presence or absence — of bacterial pathogens (H. pylori, C. difficile, E. coli), viruses, parasites, beneficial and commensal bacteria, opportunistic bacteria, and fungi including candida. It also measures clinically important markers including secretory IgA (immune function in the gut), calprotectin and lactoferrin (inflammatory markers), elastase (pancreatic enzyme output), beta-glucuronidase (estrogen metabolism marker), and zonulin (intestinal permeability marker).
